Noel Egan is not in favour of referees wearing body cams amid recent Tottenham pre-season footage.
The ex-FIFA official believes adding too much technology to football is making the sport “elitist”.
As per the Daily Mail (31 July), the referee for Spurs’ pre-season victory over a K-League XI on Wednesday 31 July was wearing a body cam which captured a wondergoal from Son Heung-min.
However, Egan – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – is not a fan of the technology being introduced.
“Again, it is an advantage to the game in one sense,” Egan said.
“It is interesting to watch for supporters. However, if you have VAR and things like body cams on referees, all of a sudden you don’t have the same game anymore.
“There are countries around the world where we aren’t seeing this kind of technology introduced. However, we’re all supposed to be playing the same game.
“If you start putting cameras on referees in England, where does it end? There is no way you can get that technology in other countries.
“Therefore, you’re making one set of rules for one country and another set of rules for another country. It starts to make football slightly elitist. I don’t see it being a massive advantage to the game personally.”

Supporters would have no doubt loved seeing Son’s goal from the angle of the referee. It is a fun little bonus for fans to get such a close-up angle of their favourite players.
However, Egan’s concerns are well justified. There has been constant outroar since the introduction of VAR.
Therefore, adding more technology could lead to similar reactions from fans. As a result, any decision to introduce things such as body cams needs to be carefully considered.
