Ex-FIFA ref says UEFA investigation likely after what Olympiacos fans did v Rangers, punishment mooted

Keith Hackett believes UEFA will investigate after Olympiacos fans were spotted throwing objects at Rangers players on Thursday.

Liam McLeod mentioned on BBC Sportsound coverage that protective netting prevented Vaclav Cerny from being hit by objects from the crowd in the 1-1 draw on 7 November.

Hackett shared that delegates are present at matches, and if spotted, a warning could increase to players being taken off the pitch if it continued.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Hackett, an ex-FIFA referee, admitted that there could be retrospective action taken against the Greek club.

At all UEFA games there is a Match Delegate appointed and he is there to act as the eyes and ears of UEFA,” he said.

He also has the authority to take action. It is unacceptable that any objects are thrown at a football match.

The referee should move to the technical area and liaise with the Delegate to invoke a well-oiled procedure.

UEFA punishment on cards for Olympiacos?

1: Stadium announcement warning fans, 2: Increased security near the scene where objects are thrown, 3: An ability to take players off the field of play.

“Whatever course of action is taken, UEFA will investigate and the club faces a strong possibility of a future game to be played behind closed doors.

Rangers fans cheer their side on

Rangers fans were superb once again over in Greece and set a glowing reference for the club.

Philippe Clement’s side responded with a much better performance and likely will feel they could have taken all three points back to Glasgow.

After fireworks were set off in the home end against Lyon though, a fine was slapped down on the Gers, something which could happen to Olympiacos this time.

In other Rangers news, Cerny has been told that he looks like a “little boy” when he plays in the Scottish Premiership
