Connor Barron had to bail out Rangers after Robin Propper caused them problems at the back as Ally McCoist branded the defender’s work “terrible”.
The TNT Sports pundit reacted live on the match commentary on 7 November as the Dutch defender headed a high ball forward straight up in the air, before Neraysho Kasanwirjo was caught out trying to tidy up the mess.
Instead the Greeks, leading 1-0 at the time, were able to mount an attack down the Gers right, forcing Barron to concede a corner.
McCoist said (7.03pm): “He did well again to get back there, Connor Barron did really well.
“Kasanwirjo doesn’t clear it well but he’s put under pressure with a terrible header from Propper and he’s got to defend another corner.”
Rangers ultimately came way unscathed and went on to equalise through Cyriel Dessers’ excellent strike, off the back of his own first-half to forget in front off goal.
Robin Propper returns to Rangers XI in place of Leon Balogun
Philippe Clement’s decision to bring former FC Twente captain Propper back into the starting line up was something of a surprise after dropping him in favour of Leon Balogun for the previous two outings.
When the Nigerian went off injured in the 2-1 League Cup win over Motherwell at the weekend it was Kasanwirjo who was brought on, much to Propper’s displeasure, in a move which Michael Stewart believed spoke volumes on the summer signing’s standing at the club live on Premier Sports (3 November).
Having arrived as one of few experienced recruits in the summer to replace former vice-captain Connor Goldson the 31-year-old has yet to establish himself and often looks uncertain.
His lack of physicality suggests he isn’t best suited to the Scottish game, but arguably does make him a better option for the European campaign.
But his wayward header to put the back line under pressure was not the only time he did so, and he was arguably partly at fault for Ayoub El Kaabi’s strike in the 56th minute after being dragged out of position and failing to get back quick enough.
He may still come good but his form so far has already raised the possibility of a quick return to the Eredivisie, with a Sam Lammers-style loan in January mooted [Heart & Hand, 27 October].
