Ex-PL CEO reveals truth after £200K-a-wk Chelsea-Potter bombshell

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted it is “normal” for Chelsea to still be paying Graham Potter’s wage.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed a “cashflow issue” at Stamford Bridge may mean the club are unable to pay their former boss a lump sum.

As per the Daily Mail (18 July), Chelsea are obliged to continue paying Potter a wage of £200,000-a-week until October.

That is despite sacking him after just seven months in charge in west London.

Potter agreed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge after leaving Brighton to take charge of the Blues.

He has recently been linked with succeeding Gareth Southgate in the England top job after his resignation last week.

Wyness insisted Chelsea’s continued payments to the 49-year-old “mean nothing but a financial transaction”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s actually quite normal.

“When a manager and club decide they’re going to part ways, there is usually either a lump sum paid or they carry on paying out the contract.

“It could just be a cashflow issue for Chelsea. I’m sure Potter has no desire or need to take a lump sum straight away. There could also be tax issues for him or his team that make it more suitable.

“It’s normal to have this arrangement.

“It’s nothing to do with relationships. I preferred paying the lump sum and cutting ties completely during my time in football, but I have also been in the case of carrying on paying out a contract.

“It doesn’t mean anything but a financial transaction.”
