King reacts to Tottenham v Man United controversy, says Maddison made meal of it

Bryan King claims Bruno Fernandes was “unlucky” to be sent off as Tottenham beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday (29 September).

The ex-Spurs scout believes Ange Postecoglou would have been happy with James Maddison’s reaction to Fernandes’ foul on him.

Manchester United’s captain was shown a straight red card late in the first half for his lunging challenge on the Spurs playmaker.

However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Maddison made a meal out of the tackle.

“I thought Fernandes was unlucky to get sent off,” King said.

“It wasn’t exactly a crunching tackle on Maddison, the actual contact was brought on by the slip. Maddison certainly made a meal of it.

“There was no real threat of him being severely injured by that tackle. However, it drew a red card. Therefore, Postecoglou would have been happy to see Maddison react like that.

“Suddenly Spurs are playing United at Old Trafford and they are down a man. That happened relatively early on as well. As a result, it changed the complexion of the game.”

As per Sky Sports Premier League on X (29 September), the Super Sunday panel did not agree with the decision to send Fernandes off.

However, Postecoglou wouldn’t have cared about this controversial incident one bit, as his side recorded a much-needed victory, with Gary Neville blown away by one player in particular.

They did it all without the injured Son Heung-min too, which will give the team plenty of confidence going forward.

In other Tottenham news, a 21-year-old at the club could be set for a Premier League loan switch next season.
