Neil McCann branded Tom Lawrence’s goal for Rangers against Hibernian as “worth the wait” after a lengthy VAR check.

Lawrence launched a stunning strike curling into the top corner at Ibrox, which opened the scoring against Hibs in the first half of the 1-0 victory on Sunday (29 September).

The assistant referee’s flag was initially raised against Lawrence for offside, but a long check confirmed the goal after an anxious wait for the home crowd.

Former Gers man McCann, co-commentating alongside Ian Crocker live on Sky Sports Football [29 September] raved about the effort, saying: “It was worth the wait, the quality of the goal is magnificent.

“Let’s talk about the finish, a lot of space on the inside, sending it outside the post with a little in-swinger, a quite brilliant goal. The Hibs goalkeeper Josef Bursik is a spectator – outstanding.”

Tom Lawrence an important man for Rangers

Lawrence has enjoyed a positive influence on a Rangers side that have performed in a stop-start manner this season, after some quarters expected him to depart Ibrox in the summer.

The only league game he did not start was the Old Firm defeat by Celtic, and the Welshman’s impact has been an early highlight of the campaign.

The goal is a signal of that, and is a strike worthy of winning any game – a few more of those in his locker would certainly give Philippe Clement some respite.

Clement’s other forward options will need to deliver just as much, in terms of creativity as much as scoring.

Hamza Igamane was a notable choice for the starting XI as Cyriel Dessers was left out, the Light Blues’ primary source of goals.

It was another performance that was not always textbook and there was notable tension at times but Lawrence’s stunner brought some much-needed relief.
