West Ham star trio Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, and Mohammed Kudus need to improve after a wretched start to the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-West Ham striker Frank McAvennie believes their comprehensive defeat to London rivals Chelsea was the ‘worst’ he’s seen Paqueta, 27, Bowen, 27, and Kudus, 24, play for the club.

The trio ended last season with a combined 70 goal contributions across all competitions but are yet to recreate that form this term.

West Ham spent an impressive £121.6million on 10 new first-team players over the summer but will still need their star trio to perform if they want to qualify for Europe.

Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, and Mohammed Kudus need to step up at West Ham

It’s been a tricky start to life in East London for new manager Julen Lopetegui, winning just two of his seven games across all competitions since taking over in the summer.

Football Insider revealed (September 21) that the Spaniard has been backed to achieve success at West Ham once his dressing room adapts to the comprehensive changes.

“I was really disappointed in the manner, you can get beat, any team can get beat but I was disappointed in the manner of it”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“I was disappointed with how easy it was to break through the defence.

“Jackson he wasn’t a confident boy but he is now after that game, he went into it and scored a couple of goals, we just let him stroll through.

“It was just basic stuff and he made the change after 25 minutes or something, he took off Guido Rodriguez, the holding midfield player and he just never got near anyone.

“At first I thought it was Soucek but he (Rodriguez) couldn’t get near the ball at all but fair play to the manager taking him off.

“It’s not too good for the boy, I’m not sure how he’ll react to it but if you’re playing like that in front of 60,000 you can’t do anything else but come off.

“But it wasn’t just him, it was the team, the team were terrible, it’s the poorest I’ve seen Kudus, Paqueta, and Bowen.

“It’s the worst I’ve seen them playing, I don’t know what happened in training, I don’t know why they looked so lackluster.

“It looked like a training game, I’ve seen training games with more fight than that.

“Something was wrong, normally West Ham come out of the traps and they just didn’t do it so they got what they deserved.

“Chelsea haven’t been firing on all cylinders, if there was ever a time we could get to them it was at the weekend and we just gave them bundles of confidence.”

In other news, West Ham fans are all saying the same thing about Julen Lopetegui ‘sacking’.
