Exclusive: Chelsea could miss out on £42m payout as legal battle rages

Chelsea could miss out on a £42million payment from the Fifa Club World Cup with the competition facing new legal action from players’ unions, sources have told Football Insider.

Fifa’s club competition is set to take place in June and July 2025 under a new format which now includes 32 teams.

Chelsea and Manchester City are set to participate as the two English teams to have qualified.

However, the tournament has faced huge backlash from players’ unions with major concerns about player burnout.

Under the current scheduling, Premier League players could be required to play more than 85 matches in some years.

As reported by Sky News, England’s Professional Footballers’ Association has launched legal action against the Club World Cup plans.

Chelsea £42m payment now at risk from legal challenge

The competition has also been condemned by Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, who suggested they would “refuse the invitation” to take part.

If the PFA are successful in their legal battle it could see English teams withdraw from the competition entirely.

The overall prize money for the competition is set at £2.1billion with each club earning £42million (€50m) for qualifying.

If Chelsea are forced to withdraw from the competition or it is rescheduled or postponed then the Londoners could miss out on a major payout from their qualification.

It could have an impact on the club’s Profit and Sustainability calculations with the Blues expected to be close to the £105million loss limit next season.
