Exclusive: Everton could be forced to sell 26-yr-old after he rejected new contract

Everton could be forced to sell Ben Godfrey after he rejected the latest contract offer from the club this week, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed the Merseyside giants may now have to consider moving Godfrey on this summer to avoid him leaving on a free transfer next summer.

Football Insider revealed on 12 June the English centre-back has rejected multiple contract offers to commit his long-term future to the Premier League side.

There has been interest in Godfrey’s services from top European clubs after Football Insider revealed on 4 June AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund are leading the chase to sign him this summer.

Italian giants Milan have held a long-term interest in the 26-year-old after previously enquiring about his availability in the January transfer window.

Everton were reluctant to let Godfrey leave the club at the time and he went on to feature heavily in the second half of the campaign in their successful fight against relegation.

But Sean Dyche’s side may now be forced to cash in on the defender this summer ahead of his deal expiring in June 2025.

Ben Godfrey could leave Everton after turning down new deal

Godfrey’s time with Everton has been ravaged by injuries since joining the club from Norwich City in a £25million deal back in 2020.

The defender has only featured 28 times in all competitions over the past two campaigns, including 16 appearances last season as he helped his side fight off relegation.

But the Merseysiders may have to review their stance on his situation after he turned down their latest contract offer at Goodison Park.

Football Insider revealed last month Everton will need to sell at least one of their “big” stars before they submit their accounts at the end of June.
