Stefan Borson: Newcastle could strike last-ditch Saudi deals to avoid points deduction

Newcastle United could look to sell players to Saudi Arabian clubs to comply with the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the north-east giants could do business with clubs from the Middle Eastern country before they submit their accounts on 30 June.

Saudi clubs invested heavily last summer, including big-money deals for Premier League stars such as Alexander Mitrovic, Ruben Neves and Fabinho.

Newcastle have also used their Saudi Arabian links to strike transfer deals with the Pro League following the £30million sale of Allan Saint-Maximin to Al-Ahli.

The Tynesiders are believed to be one of several top-flight clubs close to breaching the PSR rules and could land a points deduction if they fail to fall within the allowable losses limit.

Everton and Nottingham Forest were both docked points last season for breaching the Premier League’s spending rules.

Newcastle deals must receive Premier League approval

Borson revealed any Saudi deals Newcastle potentially look to pull off over the coming days would need to be of fair market value and approved by the governing body.

He told Football Insider: “It’s hard to say which way they are going to go.

“They may spring a couple of Saudi deals at the last minute.

“But those deals do need to be of fair market value and do need to be approved by the Premier League.

“But they do look like they are short for the current season.”
