Tottenham Sources: Big Son update today

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to trigger their option to extend Heung-min Son’s contract, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider journalist and Scottish expert Daniel Bowers revealed on the Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast that he’d be “amazed” if Spurs do not keep hold of their star player for two more years.

The 31-year-old is out of contract next summer, but the extension would tie him down until 2026, allowing Spurs to make a long-term plan for the forward.

The Premier League side would then have the option to sell Son next summer for a large fee, similar to what they did with Harry Kane, or convince him to sign a longer deal.

Of course, Tottenham’s big problem is going to be convincing the South Korea international that they are the right club for him to win trophies at club level.

Losing Son would be a real blow to Ange Postecoglou due to his influence on the team’s style, and his contributions in terms of goals.

Last season, the 31-year-old scored 17 goals and created 10 assists in 35 Premier League appearances, proving to be invaluable.

Since joining the club in 2015, Son has been one of Tottenham’s most consistent players, scoring 162 times across his 408 appearances for the club in all competitions.

There could be positive news on his contract situation long-term too, as Everton’s former chief, Keith Wyness, has claimed the club will offer him a two-year deal with improved wages.

One of the reasons why the club will be working had to extend Son’s deal is that they’ve already cut more than £27million from their wage bill this summer, Football Insider revealed.

Spur revealed that Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga, Ivan Perisic, and Ryan Sessegnon have all been released, while Tanguy Ndombele has ended his contract a year early.

In other news, Postecoglou is obsessed with signing a striker this summer.
