'Watch This Space...It Could Be A Big Story' - Keith Wyness drops new Rangers stadium claim

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers fans “would hate” moving away from Ibrox to a new stadium.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted building a new home is “not really feasible” for the Glasgow giants.

Rangers confirmed last week (20 June) that they could be unable to begin the new season at Ibrox due to material shipping delays.

Redevelopment works on the Copland Stand will take longer than expected due to the delays and league and European fixtures in August are likely to be impacted.

Ibrox has been the home of Rangers since 1899, with rumours emerging about a potential expansion in December 2023.

Wyness claimed it would take at least “five years” for the Gers to complete a move to a new arena.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This is such a big issue for the club.

“It could be simple supply issues, let’s just hope it is – but I’ve got a funny feeling there is more to this story.

We’ll have to watch this closely.

“I think the fans would hate moving away from Ibrox.

“For so many reasons, it’s the spiritual home for Rangers.

“A new stadium, at the very earliest, would take five years. It’s not really feasible.

“They’re already short of money for players, so building a new stadium would be a real issue.

“Watch this space – it could be a big story.”
