Rangers stance on Ryan Kent return shared after 'surprise' Mourinho reveal - expert

Rangers have been told to avoid a possible return for Ryan Kent after the winger was put up for sale by Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho.

Kent left Rangers upon the expiry of his contract in 2023 alongside fellow Ibrox favourite Alfredo Morelos as the club looked to head in a new direction under Michael Beale.

However, his move to Turkey failed to pay off as he made just 18 appearances in his first season, scoring only once.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Scotland striker Frank McAvennie explained that Kent didn’t do enough during his time at Ibrox to warrant a return.

McAvennie flagged Kent’s inconsistency as an issue for Rangers, claiming he would only perform in the big games – a trend which he suggests has continued in Turkey.

Kent made 218 appearances during his time at Rangers, but the club was immediately warned away from any suggestions of a reunion.

After the arrival of Mourinho, Kent was made available for transfer in a move which has been described as surprising.

“No, they shouldn’t look at bringing him back,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s a good player, but he only does it once in every five games. They’ve already got a prima donna in Cantwell.

“There’s no doubting Ryan Kent’s talent, but the fans at Ibrox will tell you he didn’t do enough. You can’t turn up against Celtic and not turn up for the other games.

“He used to show what he could do in the Celtic games but he couldn’t do it against Motherwell or any other team they’re playing against.

“That’s the hardest thing about being at Rangers or Celtic. It’s not just getting up for the European nights and semi-finals, it’s getting up for the games where you’ve got to grind out a result.

“Unfortunately, Kent didn’t do that.

“He’s obviously not done it again at Fenerbahce, otherwise they wouldn’t be letting him go. He should be producing 8/10 every week, but he’s a 4/10.

“I’m surprised Mourinho is getting rid of him unless the coaches have said something about him. He’s a good talent but something must not be right.”
