Exclusive: Man City set sights on midfield signing after Rodri bombshell today

Man City will now analyse plans to improve the defensive midfield area in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League champions are plotting a mid-season swoop after the bombshell injury to Rodri in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday (22 September).

The Spain international, 28, is expected to miss the rest of the 2024-25 campaign after an anterior cruciate ligament tear.

Sources say Pep Guardiola would now like to add to his midfield options in the January window.

Rodri was substituted in the first half of the clash at the Etihad Stadium in his third club appearance of the new season.

He sat out of City’s first three Premier League games this term as he continued to recover from a hamstring injury sustained in Spain’s Euro 2024 success against England.

Just last week, the 28-year-old said players are close to going on strike in protest at an increase in games.

The midfielder, who is among the front-runners to win the Ballon d’Or this year, is now likely to sit out for the rest of the season after his new knee injury.

Man City also have Mateo Kovacic, Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes on their books, with all three capable of playing in defensive midfield.

Guardiola’s side sit top of the Premier League with 13 points after the draw with Arsenal.

City face Watford in the League Cup on Tuesday (24 September) before a trip to Newcastle on Saturday (28 September).
