Exclusive: O'Rourke suggests unique Newcastle release clause has been agreed

Anthony Gordon may have reached an informal agreement about his future at Newcastle despite committing to a long-term contract.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke suggested that, despite there being no official release clause in his new contract, the club may have entered into a verbal agreement with the winger.

It was suggested that should the Magpies fail to qualify for the Champions League in the next two seasons, Gordon could be allowed to consider his options.

This comes after Football Insider revealed that the 23-year-old has signed a new six-year deal at Newcastle, putting an end to speculation about his exit.

He had been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool during the summer transfer window, but has squashed the rumours by committing himself to a long-term contract.

As a result of signing the new deal, O’Rourke insisted it would take a “huge” transfer fee to prise the winger away from St James’ Park in the near future.

A big-money transfer to Liverpool had been mooted for Gordon in the summer, with rumours about his long-term future at St James’ Park seemingly constant.

That speculation has now been put to bed by the agreement over a new contract, but an informal agreement may still lead to his departure.

After extensive links with a potential move to Anfield during the transfer window, many Newcastle fans suggested his head had been turned by the speculation.

This came as a result of a slow start to the season for Gordon despite Newcastle picking up 12 points from their first seven games.

Most recently, the forward missed a penalty and several chances as the Magpies failed to overturn struggling Everton at Goodison Park.

Last season, Eddie Howe’s side failed to qualify for European football after finishing seventh in the Premier League, and a repeat of that could push their best players out of the door.

With the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak also heavily linked with moves away from Newcastle, failure to qualify for Europe again could see an exodus at St James’ Park.

However, as things stand, Gordon has committed his long-term future to the club and they are now expected to open talks with their other star players.
