Exclusive: Rotherham & Barnsley make moves to sign Charlton Athletic midfielder

Rotherham and Barnsley have registered their interest in signing Charlton midfielder Terry Taylor on loan, sources have told Football Insider.

Taylor is thought to be considering his options this summer after a problematic injury-hit season last term.

The 23-year-old made only seven appearances last season and now looks to get his career back on track.

The former Wales Under-21 captain is seeking more consistent game time, as he did during the 2022-23 season at Burton.

Championship side Plymouth had a bid for Taylor rejected, which alerted Rotherham and Barnsley.

Both League One clubs are in the market for a defensive midfielder before the transfer deadline and see Taylor as a potential option.

Barnsley managed a sixth-placed finish last season in League One, but no team in the top half of the table conceded more goals than them.

Rotherham conceded 89 goals as they were relegated from the Championship during the previous campaign, highlighting the need to bolster their defensive options.

Taylor can play defensive midfield or as a central defender, and could benefit both teams next season.

Even though he struggled for game time last season, the Welshman is experienced at a League One level.

He’s made 63 appearances in the division throughout his career, which would allow him to settle into a team immediately.
