Tottenham would be able to significantly increase their spending in the transfer market if Daniel Levy manages to sell a stake in the club, sources have told Football Insider.
The Times reported on 27 July the Tottenham chairman is in talks to sell a minority stake in a deal that could value the club at up to £3.75billion, including the current debt.
Spurs are believed to be looking to sell a 10 per cent stake, according to sources, and are being advised on the sale by bankers from Rothschild.
Investment company Enic, which is controlled by Joe Lewis’s family trust, owns an 86.6-per-cent stake in Tottenham, while there are a further 30,000 smaller shareholders.
The sale of a minority stake would see new money coming into the Premier League club instead of the existing shareholders selling their part holding.
If up to £375million of equity went into the club, sources have told Football Insider Spurs would immediately have a “war chest” made available to compete in the transfer market.
Tottenham value boosted by stadium development
It’s no secret Tottenham have been open to investment for some time after Levy revealed earlier this year he was actively trying to source new investors following the publishing of the club’s latest accounts.
The development of their 62,850-capacity stadium is believed to have boosted the value and attractiveness of the club since it opened in 2019.
Spurs are also continuing to rake in a huge amount of cash after generating revenue of £549.6million in 2022-23, aided by a significant jump in their match-day income as well as hosting events such as music concerts, NFL and rugby matches.
But that success has so far failed to translate into better results on the field, having gone without lifting a trophy since 2008 and finishing outside of the Champions League places last season.
Tottenham have been relatively quiet in the summer transfer window after only securing the signings of teenage trio Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Yang Min-Hyeok.
But Football Insider revealed on 30 July Ange Postecoglou is “obsessed” about signing a new striker before the 30 August deadline.
