John Wenham feels that Emerson Royal’s expected departure provides Djed Spence with an opportunity to make himself a regular in the Tottenham first-team squad.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose is delighted that Spence has been reintegrated into the first-team picture in North London.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (9 August), Emerson will travel to Italy on Sunday 11 August before undergoing his medical with AC Milan on Monday 12 August.
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that this provides a golden opportunity for Spence.
“I’m delighted to see Spence back among the squad,” Wenham said.
“It feels like such a long time ago now that talks with Genoa broke down and the Serie A side decided not to make his stay permanent.
“He is being reintegrated into the first-team squad and whatever happened in the past appears to have been put to bed now.
“Emerson is on the verge of sealing his move to AC Milan. Therefore, there is a great opportunity for Spence to lock down a position in the first-team squad.
“That has been a real positive of pre-season, the reintegration of Spence. Hopefully, we can finally see the exciting player that we signed from Middlesbrough.”
Djed Spence to replace Emerson Royal in the Tottenham squad?
Emerson spent much of Ange Postecoglou’s debut season in the Premier League as a bit-part player. Therefore, it is not a surprise to see that he is leaving the club.
And as a result of the Brazilian’s imminent departure, the door has opened for another player to take his place as backup right-back.
Therefore, Spence will no doubt be chomping at the bit to make an impression when the 2024/25 season gets underway.
While he is unlikely to displace Porro, Spurs will have plenty more matches next season as a result of the UEFA Europa League.
Therefore, there will be plenty of minutes to go around, which could provide Spence with the opportunity to revive his Spurs career.
