Ianis Hagi will be set for a pay hike of £6000 per week if he starts another game for Rangers after playing 99 matches, according to the Daily Record.
The news outlet reported on 22 August that the Romanian could be on his way out this summer with Rapid Bucharest confirming they’re in talks to sign the 25-year-old.
His dad Gheorghe Hagi, however, has asked him to consider a move abroad and not a return to his homeland.
Ianis Hagi being relegated to the B Team at Rangers now makes sense
Hagi’s current situation at Ibrox, where he’s relegated to the B team, makes strategic sense from the club’s perspective, especially considering the financial implications tied to his playing time.
With the 25-year-old’s contract containing a clause that would trigger a £6000 per week pay rise upon reaching 100 appearances, Rangers are evidently keen to avoid this additional expense for a player they’re looking to offload.
This move not only helps Gers manage their wage bill but also underscores their intention to move him on without incurring further costs.
Given that Hagi’s future at the club seems uncertain, with interest from clubs like Rapid Bucharest, the Ibrox outfit’s decision to limit his first-team appearances can be seen as a calculated financial strategy, focusing on cost efficiency while negotiating his exit or potential transfer.
They will be hoping that they can quickly offload him as it will bring in funds that they can reinvest into strengthening the first-team squad.
It remains to be seen if Rapid do succeed in bringing the Romania international to the club before the window closes.
In the Rangers news, the Ibrox outfit appear to be closing in on a new defender transfer ahead of the 30 August deadline.
