Expert suggests Tottenham could struggle to sell unwanted player due to £100k/wk wages

John Wenham believes Tottenham could struggle to find a buyer for out-of-favour defender Sergio Reguilon.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose claims the left-back’s wages could be a stumbling block in any potential sale.

Reguilon spent last season on loan with Brentford and has now returned to Hotspur Way ahead of next season.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels the club find themselves in a difficult situation when it comes to the Spaniard.

“Tottenham will struggle to sell Reguilon because of his £100,000-per-week wages,” Wenham said.

“That is why Brentford had no interest in keeping him.

“We’ve got to find something to do with him. He has one year left on his contract and we need to try and find a move for him.”

There have been few reports linking Reguilon with a move away from North London.

Considering his underwhelming form over the past few seasons it is unlikely that many clubs would be willing to match what he is earning at Tottenham.

As a result, the 27-year-old will be in no rush to accept a move away with just one year remaining on his deal.

The club might consider terminating his contract just as they did with Tanguy Ndombele, but that seems rather extreme.

Reguilon does still have some quality and if Tottenham can’t find a buyer for him Ange Postecoglou might consider using him as a backup left-back.

Either way, it appears that the defender’s long-term future lies away from the club.
