Fabrizio Romano shares if Rangers are close to deal to replace exit-linked star

Rangers will be “active” in their search for a Todd Cantwell replacement this summer but nothing is “imminent”, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer specialist reported via Give Me Sport on Sunday (28 July) that Philippe Clement’s Gers will stack up their interest in several attacking midfielders after the Englishman submitted a transfer request at Ibrox [Heart and Hand, 24 July].

While the Light Blues know they need a replacement for the outgoing 26-year-old, no names have yet emerged so it isn’t clear who will fill the void left by Cantwell in the Light Blues’ side.

At this moment in time, Rangers have a surplus of number 10s in their squad, especially as neither Cantwell nor Ianis Hagi haven’t yet managed to complete their summer moves away from Glasgow.

If or when the exit-linked pair depart, Clement will be left with Tom Lawrence and Kieran Dowell as his only natural attacking midfielders and they have also been linked with moves south of the border as well.

In the space of only a matter of weeks, the Belgian has gone from being spoilt for choice in the middle of the park to now looking slightly short on options so new recruits have to be a priority in the final weeks of the window.

However, it would be a surprise if there was any movement into Ibrox before a buyer is found for Cantwell.

The Gers have found themselves in a position where they have to sell before they buy so until his wage is off the books, it is unlikely a replacement will be bought.

Hopefully, supporters won’t have to wait too much longer until both Cantwell and Hagi depart so their attention can return to potential incomings rather than outgoings.
