Tottenham are preparing a move for Brighton full-back Tariq Lamptey ahead of the January transfer window, Football Transfers reports.
According to the news outlet’s website [15 November], Brighton will consider a cut-price January sale to avoid losing the defender on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Ange Postecoglou is eager to recruit in the winter transfer window after his side’s poor start in the Premier League and has identified a left-sided centre-back and left-back as priority positions to strengthen [Graeme Bailey].
Tottenham could look to replace Pedro Porro with Tariq Lamptey
Tottenham undoubtedly need to improve the defensive depth in North London with Micky van de Ven’s injury leaving the side thin ahead of a gruelling fixture schedule heading into the New Year.
However, Daniel Levy may be forced to become more active in the transfer market than initially planned with Pedro Porro facing an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Real Madrid prepare to make a move.
The 25-year-old is highly coveted at the La Liga giants and while the priority in Spain is to tempt Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool, Spurs cannot afford to rest on their laurels.
Lamptey would be an incredibly shrewd signing for Postecoglou, the Ghanaian international has fallen out of favour at the Amex but the 24-year-old has plenty of time to fulfil his promising potential.
Furthermore, he can operate on both flanks and provide much-needed depth for Porro, should he remain with the club, and Destiny Udogie, a quality which is severely lacking in the current crop in North London.
Everton are also touted to be in the race for the full-back and while Tottenham is, on paper, the more attractive footballing project, the promise of guaranteed first-team football could be a hard bargain for Levy to compete with.
Nevertheless, players of Lamptey’s quality and Premier League experience rarely become available for a cut-price fee, Spurs would be negligent not to pursue this deal and free up funds to target other problem positions.
Postecoglou is at risk of falling further behind in the race to qualify for the Champions League next year and if the league position worsens heading into the New Year, Tottenham fans could see an influx of activity, including the arrival of Lamptey.
