Rangers would have to “seriously consider” a last-minute big money transfer approach for Jack Butland, according to Barry Ferguson.
Philippe Clement had insisted that the Englishman is not for sale earlier in the summer transfer window, having previously been the subject of a late approach from Nottingham Forest in January [Daily Record, 30 January].
Although Go Radio pundit Ferguson doesn’t want to see the keeper exit Ibrox before the 30 August deadline, he admits that every player in the Light Blues’ side is available at the price at this stage of the window.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (28 August, 23:55) he said: “Every player has a price on their head.
“If somebody comes in and they’re willing to pay £15million or £20million for Jack Butland then I would imagine the club would have to seriously consider that.
“You don’t want them to consider that, because Jack is a massive part of the team going forward, but just in any team and certainly up in Scotland with Rangers and Celtic every player has a price on their head.”
Will Jack Butland exit Rangers before Ibrox transfer deadline?
As Ferguson suggests, in an ideal world the Light Blues would be able to reject any offers that arrived for all of their players in the final days of the transfer window, but that simply isn’t possible at Ibrox this summer.
While time is running out for Clement to complete his squad overhaul in Glasgow, the Belgian is still looking to raise funds through a few more player sales to make some last-minute additions to his squad.
Butland is the most valuable player in his ranks and if he were allowed to depart, he would fetch a good eight-figure fee.
But the Rangers boss has made it clear that he has absolutely no interest in selling the Englishman and therefore killed any potential interest in his signature.
Maybe a Premier League club could test the Light Blues’ resolve in the final days of the window as Forest did all the way back in January. As Ferguson suggests, every player in Clement’s squad does have a price.
