It is “up to James Tavernier” whether or not he leaves Rangers in the final days of the transfer window, according to Barry Ferguson.

The Gers skipper has been linked with a move away from Ibrox with Besiktas and their manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst reportedly keen on securing his services before the Turkish window slams shut [Fotomac, 9 September].

Although Go Radio pundit Ferguson admits he still isn’t sure whether or not the Englishman will leave Glasgow in the final days of the window, he admits the decision will ultimately lie with the 32-year-old.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (9 September, 1:08:50) he said: “I keep saying the same thing, he’s been linked for the last season, season and a half.

“Obviously the Turkish window is still open, he played under Gio and Gio knows what type of player he is. Will it happen? I’m so unsure whether he will leave or if he’ll say.

“Listen, it’s going to be up to James Tavernier because he’s obviously got a couple of years left on his contract so we’ll just have to wait and see how the window plays out.”

Will James Tavernier exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer rumours?

Before a ball was kicked this season, Tavernier was seemingly insistent that he was going to remain a Gers player beyond the end of the transfer window regardless of the constant speculation around him.

But following the defeat to Celtic at Parkhead, it feels as though the pendulum has shifted and now there could be a genuine desire on the player’s side to get out of Glasgow as quickly as possible in the coming days.

The 32-year-old has undoubtedly become a bit of a scapegoat in recent years, but his performances haven’t been anywhere near good enough, particularly in Old Firm games and that is why he has come in for criticism.

He may now feel that a move away from Ibrox it was is required for him to get back to enjoying his football again. If that is the case, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him push for a move before the Turkish window slams shut.

As Ferguson suggests, all Rangers can do is wait and see.
