Ferguson speculates Rangers in behind-the-scenes talks with PL giants, door could open in days

Rangers could be in discussions with INEOS to become part of a network of teams that includes Manchester United, Barry Ferguson says.

Patrick Stewart, formerly at the Red Devils, is set to become the Gers’ chief executive officer on 16 December, and at the recent annual general meeting, director Alastair Johnston talked about the possibility of striking up a multi-club partnership [Daily Record, 5 December].

In the Daily Record [7 December], Ferguson wonders whether something could be going on behind the scenes at Ibrox.

He said: “On the banks of the Clyde, it ended up being quite a dull affair, but what I did find interesting were Alistair Johnston’s remarks about the potential to become part of a network of clubs — and the hint it could involve joining the same stable as Nice and Manchester United.

“With Patrick Stewart about to sign on as CEO after 18 years at Old Trafford it does make you wonder if there’s something being discussed. Why wouldn’t you want to get involved in something like that?

“If Stewart can open that door for in his first few days in the job then, who knows, maybe things might be about to take a turn for the better.”

The Light Blues are not in the most stable financial conditions at the moment, confirming a loss of £17.2 million in their recent accounts.

Rangers can’t partner up with Manchester United

Despite the many advantages the Bears may get from partnering up with Man United, the Glaswegian outfit risk becoming a feeder club.

While the Light Blues have a well-known history, they can’t compete with the financial might of the Red Devils.

Jim Ratcliff dipped his hands at Old Trafford earlier this year and now has sporting control at the Manchester club.

Rangers can’t have someone like the INEOS chief come in and dictate the team’s transfer policy and potentially take the best players out of Glasgow to OGC Nice or Man United.

The Light Blues aren’t in the best of positions at the moment, but the priority at Ibrox should be getting a new chairman rather than making deals that might hurt the future of the Glaswegian outfit.

Philippe Clement’s future should be one of the things Stewart should be looking at, with the Belgian failing to bring the best out of the squad at his disposal.

The Old Firm Scottish League Cup final is on 15 December, and the incoming Gers CEO could have a massive decision to make as soon as he steps into office.
