Chris Sutton believes some of the pressure has been eased on Rangers boss Philippe Clement after recent results.
However, writing via the Daily Record [7 December], the ex-Celtic striker claims the pressure could yet be put right back on the Belgian with the visit of Tottenham in the UEFA Europa League [12 December] and the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic at Hampden Park [15 December] on the horizon.
The Gers are now 11 points behind their Glasgow rivals in the Scottish Premiership.
And Sutton believes Celtic are now uncatchable after their 1-0 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie Stadium on Wednesday [4 December], with Reo Hatate’s late winner acting as “a dagger” into Rangers hearts.
Rangers boss Philippe Clement still under pressure at Ibrox?
It goes without saying that the Gers have made serious improvements in recent weeks, and it looks as though they’ll have the chance to continue showcasing that against Ross County in the Scottish Premiership at Victoria Park on Sunday [8 December], despite the threat of Storm Darragh.
Clement’s side have won their last three matches on the spin. However, as Sutton alluded to, beating Nice 4-1 in the Europa League at the Allianz Riviera [28 November] and thrashing Kilmarnock 6-0 at Ibrox on Wednesday [4 December] won’t mean much if the Gers go and lose to Tottenham and Celtic.
While defeat in the Europa League might perhaps be forgiven, losing the Scottish League Cup final to Brendan Rodgers’ side would undo all the hard work and progress that has been made as of late.
Therefore, while Clement has bought himself some time at Ibrox, he is by no means out of the woods yet.
It looks as though the title race is already over, which means Rangers cannot afford to let another trophy pass them by, especially not if Celtic would be the team lifting it.
As a result, the upcoming week could perhaps be the biggest of Clement’s time in Glasgow to date.
In other Rangers news, the club have been tipped to open a door within days as Manchester United talks are mooted.
