Ferguson tells Clement to complete new transfer regardless of what Rangers man did v Dynamo Kyiv

Barry Ferguson has told Philippe Clement he still needs to sign a new striker at Rangers, despite new developments around Cyriel Dessers.

The Nigerian forward has had a reasonable start to the season having been surrounded by speculation this summer and impressed as he scored the last-minute equaliser against Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday (6 August).

While Daily Record pundit Ferguson believes Dessers can carry the responsibility of being the Gers number nine for now, he still believes the Light Blues should sign another forward before August’s transfer deadline.

Writing for the Daily Record on Friday (9 August) he said: “Do Rangers need another striker to bolster the manager’s options for the season ahead? Absolutely.

“However, in the meantime, Dessers is having to carry that responsibility on his own shoulders and it has to be said, he has never once hidden away from it. That’s why I would never criticise the guy.

“He gets hammered week in, week out and must be aware of the noise as it never seems to go away.”

Dessers has come in for plenty of criticism since he arrived in Glasgow and while a lot of it has been justified, the striker has had a habit of proving people wrong that simply has to be admired.

However, with another European campaign up and running alongside the league season, Clement cannot be reliant on the Nigerian to start week in and week out as that workload at the top end of the pitch has to be shared.

So far, there has been little suggestion that either Danilo or Hamza Igamane have what it takes to shoulder that burden this season and while that may change, the Gers have to be in the market for a new number nine.

It could well rely on some more high-earners heading out of the exit door first, but the Rangers boss and the recruitment team at Ibrox should be doing everything in their power to get a deal over the line.

Hopefully, something can be done before the transfer window slams shut at the end of August.
