Everton will be left feeling “aggrieved” after recent PSR developments in the Premier League this season, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
Leicester appear to have dodged a potential points deduction after the Premier League (3 September) confirmed an independent Appeal Board had upheld their appeal against an alleged PSR breach.
Although the Toffees were able to dodge relegation at the expense of the Foxes, Plumley believes that recent events have shown the challenges of having different regulations in different leagues.
“There will be clubs that win and other clubs will lose in these cases,” Plumley exclusively told Goodison News.
“Everton will be absolutely feeling aggrieved with the Leicester situation, albeit, they’ve managed to stay in the Premier League during that time.
“You can look at the extra income that they will have generated by being a Premier League club compared to what Leicester did.
“But the absolute fact of it is that if there was a financial breach there, Leicester have not been deducted points or charged because of the fact that they’ve argued that they weren’t a Premier League club at the time, you can see why Everton would be a little bit annoyed with that.
“It won’t just be Everton, there will be several clubs that will feel pretty aggrieved and I would just go back to the challenges with regulation in the industry at the minute and the difference between the Premier League and the Champions League.
“Having two separate leagues, two separate governing bodies, two separate sets of regulations is always likely to pose challenges and we’ve seen that with the Leicester case in particular.”
Why did Leicester not get a point deduction like Everton?
It does ultimately feel as though these financial issues in the Premier League are not being judged on equal terms, with every club receiving different punishments for what appear to be comparable charges.
The Toffees are well within their rights to feel aggrieved as they appear to have been hit more severely than any other Premier League outfit so far.
This system simply has to change sooner rather than later as recent developments have shown that it simply is not fit for purpose or competition.
