Finance Expert: Everton look to cash in on star, it won't be straight PSR profit

Everton would prefer to cash in on Amadou Onana rather than Jarrad Branthwaite this summer although a deal with PSR isn’t straightforward, according to Dan Plumley.

The Toffees spent £33m on the Belgium international two years ago and could sell him to help with their financial situation this summer in a £50m deal, with the likes of Aston Villa [TEAMtalk, 15 June] and Bayern Munich [Sky Germany, 25 June], interested.

But a £17m profit is not necessarily what would show up on their books if that deal happened according to football finance expert Plumley, who believes the club have shown they’d rather keep Branthwaite than Onana with their actions so far this summer, having rejected a bid from Manchester United.

I think obviously we’ve got to look at the bigger picture of that transfer as well, because when you sign a player and you look at the amortization charge and the wages you spent on the player to get a true profit or loss on the sale,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“It’s not quite as easy as saying it’s going to be a straight £17m. They’ll be running the calculations to see what it is on the books.

“But with the player comparison with Branthwaite and Onana, you’re looking for which one is probably more likely to go if those figures are in the right kind of ballpark that we’re talking about, and they’re probably looking to keep hold of Branthwaite and Onana is maybe one they can look to maybe cash in on.

“At that kind of price, I think that’s a good price at the minute in the market. If it does come down to the ultimate person owning that, and that might be all the way up to the owner, so there’s a few decisions that need to be made.

“If you’re comparing those two players, they seem to be very keen on keeping hold of Branthwaite and Onana is one they’re looking at and saying, ‘if we can get £50m then that’s not a bad offer’.”

Everton could push for more than £50m for Amadou Onana

The Toffees’ financial situation has been a big talking point this summer and the subject of plenty of transfer rumours for key outgoings at the club.

But with July now upon us, all the club’s key players are still contracted at Goodison Park and that means Kevin Thelwell has got plenty of leverage when it comes to negotiations with other clubs.

Branthwaite now looks unlikely to leave with Manchester United refusing to meet his £70m valuation, but Onana is still expected to move on after making it clear he was eyeing a transfer after Euro 2024.

£50m is a number that was mooted because of the financial situation but after selling Ben Godfrey and Lewis Dobbin there is a belief that PSR has been complied with before the deadline.

That means the Toffees can now demand even more for Onana or Branthwaite, but the Belgian certainly seems to be the more likely to head towards the exit doors.

In other Everton news, developments are expected next week after an official bid was made for a Toffees-linked star.
