The collapse of Everton’s proposed takeover from The Friedkin Group is a major cause for concern, football finance expert Dan Plumley has said.
As we now know, it was confirmed on Fridsay that The Friedkin Group will not be moving ahead as planned with their takeover of Everton Football Club (Alan Myers, 19 July).
In an exclusive chat with Goodison News, the aforementioned Plumley spoke candidly about these developments.
“It’s a huge blow,” said Plumley. “Yes, the Friedkin Group (TFG) have helped out with some of the repayments back to lenders and have still pledged loans to the stadium but for them to take a look at the books of the club and decide it is too risky is a statement of how bad the financial situation is.
“They have a track record across sport and other industries and are basically saying they don’t think the club is right to invest in. It does feel like back to square one in many ways. Big blow.”
What’s next for Everton?
It certainly seems as if there’s a lot of pessimism in the air from Everton fans right now. That’s somewhat understandable, too, considering that many of them were hoping and praying that this was the lifeline they needed. Still, even though it hasn’t come to fruition, there are definitely options out there.
For example, a group backed by Michael Dell has been rumoured to be interested in making a move of their own. Hopefully, upon analysing the financies of Everton, they come to the conclusion that they’re willing to get stuck in and give everything to restoring confidence and stability at Goodison Park.
For Sean Dyche, it has to be business as usual with pre-season. Yes, there’s a lot of talk surrounding the club and that’s bound to be reaching some of the players, but he needs to use it as inspiration. It’s not going to be easy but if anyone can do it, it’s him.
In other Everton news, Manchester United have submitted a bid in an attempt to hijack Aston Villa’s move for Amadou Onana.
