Rangers and Ianis Hagi may have agreed to “meet in the middle” to resolve their contract standoff after recent Ibrox developments, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
The Romanian international has returned to Philippe Clement’s first-team squad having been exiled during pre-season in Glasgow because of a clause in his deal with the Light Blues [Daily Record, 13 August].
While reports suggest Hagi was willing to wave a potential wage increase he was entitled to resolve the stalemate [Daily Record, 1 October], Plumley has suggested both the club and player will have negotiated to find a solution.
“I think it always comes down to negotiation,” Plumley exclusively told Ibrox News.
“Often it can be a little bit of both the club and the player and this one is interesting because the Daily Record are reporting that the player has forgone that clause now.
“That may or may not be confirmed at some point. The club are also saying the situation has been resolved so we’re kind of still looking at it without knowing the exact outcome.
“We have to be aware of the player power angle here and the boardroom power dynamics here. That’s nothing new of course, that’s kind of all part of the modern game.
“I think sometimes, it becomes the time to go back to negotiations. If you’ve got a sticking point, you’ve got to sit down and thrash it out.
What happened to Rangers star Ianis Hagi at Ibrox?
“Whether that gives the player a little bit, or the club, or they meet in the middle, ultimately you want some sort of resolution because he’s a good player to have in that squad and seems to have integrated back in pretty swiftly.
“Usually, negotiating is the way forward but again, there have been a couple of reports about how this one has played out.
“It could be that both sides have agreed in the middle a little bit.”
Hagi is well and truly back in the fold under Philippe Clement, but he will have to wait a little bit longer to pick up his 101st appearance in Light Blue colours after he was sent off during his return against St Johnstone.
Once his ban is served, the attacking midfielder will be keen to win back a regular place in the Rangers’ starting XI and get his career back up and running after a difficult few years for the Romanian international.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are understood to have hired a new agency to help fill backroom roles at Ibrox
