Finance expert predicts if Tottenham will copy 'Huge' Man United behind-the-scenes move

Football finance expert Dan Plumley has predicted whether Tottenham will follow Manchester United and give up control of football operations to a minority investor.

Reports suggest Amanda Staveley is in advanced talks to buy a sizeable stake in Spurs [The Mirror reported, 28 September] with former Spurs scout Byran King telling Tottenham News the stake could be comparable to Jim Ratcliffe’s at Old Trafford.

While Plumley admits that sort of handover of responsibility is possible in North London, he insists the people already in the Lilywhites’ boardroom will continue to have the majority of power.

“This ultimately comes down to the individual doesn’t it,” Plumley exclusively told Tottenham News.

“It’s not a kind of one-size-fits-all model. We’ve seen what’s happened at Manchester United and that has happened at other clubs but on a much smaller scale and it’s not been as high profile.

“If you’re dealing with some of the biggest Premier League clubs the exposure piece becomes more prevalent with what you’re doing and what the shareholders are doing.

“Giving up the football side of things was a huge move for Manchester United. I think ultimately it comes down to the individuals and the ownership group that currently has the majority share.

“You can have minority shareholders that have a really significant voice and are really front and centre of day-to-day operations, or you can have them in the background a little bit.

“It often becomes a negotiation piece and depending on the strategic objectives of the club that they’re buying into.

“But also the people that are in the boardroom that are making the big decisions at the minute are the ones who still have the most power.”

Daniel Levy has been at the front and centre of most of Spurs’ major footballing decisions over the last few years, for better or for worse, and it would come as a shock if he were to give up that power.

If Staveley does secure a stake in North London however, it will change the power dynamic at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
