Finance Expert reacts as Rangers announce 'Biggest' sponsor deal in Scottish football

Rangers’ shirt sponsorship agreement with the Kindred Group is believed to be the “biggest deal” in Scottish football, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

The Light Blues announced earlier this season that they had extended their partnership with the group, which is home to Unibet and 32Red which appear on the front of the Gers’ shirts.

If everything goes to plan, Philippe Clement’s side is set to pocket £3million [Four Lads, 18 September] and Plumley believes that would make it a more expensive deal than Celtic’s current front-of-shirt sponsor.

“I’ll try not to upset too many fans with this one,” Plumley exclusively told Ibrox News.

“It’s really tricky to get the actual numbers because sometimes they will roll them into their commercial revenue or sponsorship revenue package, so you can’t always see the absolute figure.

“In terms of what we do know and what we’ve seen, the Celtic deal is rumoured to be about £2.5million a year and the Rangers one in £3million, which probably does make it the biggest deal in the minute in Scottish football.

“Across Europe, it’s tricky to get direct comparisons with clubs that you’d think would be sort of in and around Rangers in that space because they don’t disclose that information freely.

“If you look right at the very top where we do know some of the numbers, the kind of top 10 deals for shirt sponsorships are tracking in and around the €50million to €70million a year.

“Of course, they’re the biggest clubs, but it gives you a sense of the scale of what you’re battling with at the very top of the industry.

“But certainly, as Rangers are saying, this looks like a big, big deal in the context of Scottish football and obviously a good one for Rangers in that regard.”

How big is the gap between Rangers and Celtic in the Old Firm?

While there is still a major gap in the financial positions of the two Old Firm clubs, it is a step in the right direction for the Gers that they have managed to secure such a major deal.

Hopefully, it will be the first of many to help bolster the Light Blues position off of the field as they look to win back the dominance of both Glasgow and the Scottish Premiership over the coming years.

The current board at Ibrox have been slammed for some questionable decisions in recent seasons, but this feels like a step in the right direction.
