Alan Hutton admits Hamza Igamane was “all over the place” against Hibernian and believes Cyriel Dessers remains the “number one” striker at Rangers.
The Moroccan forward was handed his first start of the season as the Gers ran out 1-0 winners on Sunday (29 September), but he struggled to get involved in proceedings before being substituted early in the first half.
Although Premier Sports pundit Hutton remains convinced that there “is a player there”, he believes that Dessers’ cameo from the bench demonstrated why he has to continue to be a regular starter under Clement.
Speaking on The Scottish Football Social Club (30 September, 12:50) he said: “I was looking forward to seeing him start a game after the Dundee United cameo.
“I thought he looked impressive so I was looking forward to seeing what he would give you on a start, especially at Ibrox.
“I thought he was all over the place instead of just being that focal point, being that number nine that Dessers can be and then working from there.
“I don’t know if he was desperate to get on the ball to make something happen, but he was coming short, going wide and leaving that big area up top with very rarely anyone in it.
“There is a player there and I think it is going to take him time to settle, get used to everything. But at this moment in time, Dessers is the number one choice for me and I think he showed that when he came on as well.”
What has happened to Hamza Igamane at Rangers and Ibrox?
As Hutton suggests, Igamane’s first start in Rangers colours left a little bit to be desired, but the Moroccan has shown in his cameo appearances from the bench that he is an incredibly talented player.
At just 21 years old, he may not be ready to lead the Light Blues line from the off, but when given time to develop and settle in Glasgow the initial signs suggest that he could grow to become a really effective option at Ibrox.
It took Dessers a long time to find his feet as Rangers’ number nine when he arrived in Scotland last summer. Even now the Nigerian has his critics so it would be naive to expect Igamane to seamlessly slot into the system.
Hopefully, Clement will be willing to hand him further starts between now and the end of the Premiership season.
Of course, Dessers should be starting the biggest games of the season against the likes of Celtic and Lyon, but that doesn’t mean that Igamane doesn’t have a role to play both off the bench and in other matches.
