John Bennett’s loan to Rangers is unlikely to be impacted by his decision to step down as chairman, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

The Light Blues confirmed in an official statement on 14 September that the 61-year-old had stepped down from his role due to health reasons, with John Gilligan replacing him on a temporary basis at Ibrox.

Prior to his departure, Bennett was understood to have lent the Gers a “large sum of money” [Kieran Maguire, 19 September] and Plumley insists the terms of that agreement are unlikely to change after recent developments.

“It won’t impact it necessarily,” Plumley exclusively told Ibrox News.

“It’s one of those where it could and it couldn’t providing the terms and conditions of the loan are as they were, it doesn’t mean that stepping down in that regard would have any impact on that loan because it’s treated as a separate thing completely.

“I guess where it could have an impact, is if the personal motives had changed regards to that and you could go into renegotiate the terms on that loan and sit down and have a conversation about it.

“It doesn’t have to play out that way so I think the personal motive or desire here will probably drive that if anything.

“From a transactional point of view, if it’s all the same it doesn’t have to effect anything to do with those particular loans at all.”

So far, there has been no indication that Bennett will be knocking down doors at Ibrox to get his money back, particularly as he still has a stake in the Light Blues despite standing down as chairman.

While the 61-year-old will be criticised for his decision-making during his time in charge in Glasgow, and rightly so, he appears to have done everything in his power to help the Gers attempt to close the gap to Celtic.

Hopefully, the appointment process to find his successor will be completed quickly and smoothly so that Philippe Clement and his side can be handed a bit more direction from the top of the football club.
