Stephen McGinn has told Dujon Sterling to hold talks with Philippe Clement to decide his best position because his versatility is becoming a “problem” at Rangers.

The Englishman has played in almost every area of the field since arriving at Ibrox last summer but has struggled to hold down a starting place so far this season.

Sterling started the Gers’ League Cup clash with Dundee last time out but was hooked at halftime having looked off of the pace and Go Radio pundit McGinn has mooted a lack of trust between Clement and the 24-year-old.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (24 September, 16:55) he said: “He’s covered a lot of positions, but he’s never really held one of them as his own.

“He’s not quite got going this year, it doesn’t feel as though Philippe Clement trusts him quite the same, he took him off at halftime [v Dundee].

“I think that can be a problem for some people that they go through their career and they fill in different positions and it seems to suit them.

“Now for Sterling, he has to decide on a position between him and the manager. Maybe have a conversation and just say, look I need one position here to focus on because my performance levels are dropping and I’ve not quite kicked on the way I wanted to.

“He had a really promising start and I think that will be a bit of an issue.”

What has happened to Dujon Sterling at Rangers and Ibrox?

While Sterling’s versatility has made him so useful over the last year or so, it has prevented the Englishman from ever really establishing himself in one set position at Ibrox.

Most assumed the 24-year-old had been signed to be James Tavernier’s replacement at right-back while offering some cover in central defence, but it feels as though he has played anywhere but right-back in a Gers shirt.

Sterling has probably looked at his best when deployed in a central midfield role. The former Chelsea man’s energy and incredible work ethic have allowed him to be a combative presence in the middle of the park.

While it won’t be easy for him to force his way into the starting XI week in and week out as he competes with the likes of Mohamed Diomande, Connor Barron and Nico Raskin, maybe that should be where his focus remains.

But with Jefte suspended for the Europa League clash with Malmo on Thursday (26 September) Sterling may have to settle for being the utility man for just a little bit longer.

In other Rangers news, Clement has been lauded for a recent Tavernier decision at Ibrox this season
