'Flatters to deceive' - Pundit tells Levy to avoid deal for attacker Tottenham wanted to sign

Alan Hutton has told Tottenham chief Daniel Lev not to pursue a deal for free agent Memphis Depay this summer amid new transfer developments in North London.

The Dutch international is without a club following an 18-month spell with Atletico Madrid and was previously understood to be a target for the Lilywhites during his time with Barcelona [90min, 10 November 2022].

Ange Postecoglou is on the lookout for new attacking options to bolster his ranks ahead of the new Premier League season, with a new striker expected to be high on the agenda to finally replace Harry Kane.

While Hutton admits a move for a “technically gifted” 30-year-old may appeal financially to Tottenham, he doesn’t think Depay has what it takes to impress week in and week out in the Premier League this season.

“He’s always been a good player,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“Even when he came to Manchester United, he came with so much hype and I was really looking forward to seeing him and he was a bit of a letdown.

“I could be totally wrong here, I don’t know if it’s all the off-the-field stuff that goes on with him but does that affect him?

“He comes with the Dutch squad and you think he’s really going to do it this time and he’ll do some good things and then I think he flatters to deceive a little bit.

“I’m not so sure, I don’t think the Premier League suits him, I don’t think he’s got that pace to burst away from people.

“Yes, he’s got that moment of brilliance and we’ve seen it, there’s no doubting that because he’s a technically gifted player. But week in and week out, doing it regularly at such a high level I’m not so sure and we’ve seen that with all the moves he’s had.

“Yes he’s played at big clubs, but he’s always moved on and again it’s one I’m just not sure about.

Are Tottenham close to any new signings in the summer transfer window?

If Spurs are in the market for a centre-forward who can finally replace Kane this summer, signing a player who has flopped at Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and to a degree Barcelona probably isn’t the best option.

Levy tends to avoid spending money where he can in the transfer window, but he is unlikely to even consider this deal as the Dutchman is no better than the options already at Postecoglou’s disposal.

Any money saved by not offering the 30-year-old a contract could instead be invested into a deal to bring a clinical forward like Ivan Toney to North London, who would have twice the impact of Depay.

In other Tottenham news, Levy has been backed to sanction Richarlison’s departure this summer as he is ready to “go and get” a new forward
