Kris Boyd believes Rangers may want to “force” James Tavernier and Connor Goldson out of Ibrox this summer.

Speaking live on Sky Sports after the fixture announcements (27 June), the former Ibrox hitman admitted that the club’s transfer plans are seemingly underway but outgoings are likely for Philippe Clement to get his ideal squad.

Tavernier and Goldson have both been linked with moves away from the club [Daily Record, 24 April], but Boyd believes it will be difficult for Rangers to “force them out” and believes they are relying on someone coming in with offers to be able to move them on and replace them this summer.

“He’ll obviously want to bring in players of his own but it’s difficult when players are under contract,” he said.

“There has been rumours that Connor Goldson and James Tavernier will move on. They’re under contract, it’s not going to be easy just to force them out.

“You’re going to need somebody to come along and obviously take them off your hands if that is the case.”

Rangers to be ruthless with James Tavernier and Connor Goldson

For the longest time now both Tavernier and Goldson have been two of the first names on the Rangers teamsheet, and deservedly so.

But things are changing at Ibrox under Philippe Clement, and it now seems clear that he is open to both players moving on if the cash is right to bring in replacements and strengthen the squad.

Both defenders are on the wrong side of 30 now, but forcing the players out of the club would be a huge decision and would surely risk backlash from the fans for treating two great servants that way.

Football is a results business and obviously it would be forgotten about if it ended up helping the team to win the league again and dethrone Celtic, but that’s a big risk.

In an ideal world those Saudi links come true and the club receive offers that are too good to refuse, but it seems like there may be some big decisions for Clement and the board to make this summer.

In other Rangers news, the club could bankroll a new striker signing with the sale of this first-team star with talks advanced for his exit.
