Rangers will have been assured that Jack Butland will be “going nowhere” this summer if they have decided to make him captain, according to Kenny Miller.

Reports have suggested Philippe Clement has told the English international he will be taking the armband from James Tavernier next season, in the clearest indication yet the defender will be sold [Daily Record, 25 June].

However, the Ibrox stopper has been linked with a move away from Glasgow himself ahead of this summer, but Sky Sports pundit Miller believes this update shows the Gers believe they will keep him.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (26 June) he said: “It definitely points to something and some kind of movement happening. In Glasgow, there’s no smoke without fire so there will probably be some kind of element of truth to the story.

“I had the feeling towards the end of last season that this might be the summer that he might leave and he’s obviously been linked with a couple of ex-managers in Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if James left this summer which would leave the captaincy open and I think with how many callers were in crying for Jack Butland to be given that.

“Again, he’s a player there has been a lot of speculation surrounding as well and in the future does he end up back down in England in the Premier League? If there is truth there and Jack Butland has been named the captain, the club must have had assurances that he’s going nowhere.”

Will Jack Butland leave Rangers and Ibrox in summer transfer window?

There have been few players who have begun their Rangers careers as well as Jack Butland. The Englishman was one of many new signings made by Michael Beale this summer and barring the odd mistake, he was easily the most successful.

Week after week, the former Manchester United man pulled off incredible saves to keep the Light Blues in contests and the title race. That was always going to mean he would garner interest, but the Gers seem keen to keep him.

Jack Butland has been a revelation for Rangers since arriving at Ibrox

Whether or not they will be able to turn down a big money offer from the Premier League if it does arrive remains to be seen. However, they must be confident in their chances if they are willing to hand him the armband next season.

Hopefully, some clarity will emerge from the club sooner rather than later so that supporters know what to expect next season. With pre-season edging closer day by day, you would imagine some official updates will be made.
