Gary Lineker makes ‘Mad’ Tottenham v Liverpool prediction

Gary Lineker can see Liverpool making changes which may hand Tottenham a boost in their EFL Cup semi-final tie.

Spurs welcome the Reds to North London on 8 January in the first leg of the cup clash with a view to earning a final spot for the first time since 2021.

This will be no easy task as Ange Postecoglou’s side have already lost 6-3 to the Merseysiders this season, a result that is indicative of the Lilywhites’ form in recent weeks.

Looking ahead to the semi-final encounter, Lineker offered his prediction on The Rest is Football podcast (30 December) and stated what might give Spurs an edge.

He said: “Particularly, probably the cup game because it’s been so long since Spurs have won something. It’s hard to see him getting past Liverpool. The only thing I would say is that Liverpool will probably rest quite a few.

“I know it sounds mad in a semi-final, but there’s Champions League games coming up, although they’re in pretty good shape there. But with them being so far ahead in the league, that would take absolute priority for Liverpool.

“So I’d be surprised if they didn’t mix it up a little bit, which might help the chances of Spurs.”

There is no doubt that Spurs are in a lull of form right now which may not serve them well ahead of a two-legged clash against the Premier League leaders.

Postecoglou has had questions to answer off the back of three frustrating results in the last three games, capped off by a home draw against Wolves.

Given that Gary O’Neil was recently sacked due to poor performance, a draw against the West Midlands outfit isn’t good enough.

This won’t fill supporters at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with any confidence ahead of the EFL Cup semi-final against a top side.

Slot’s side took Tottenham apart at times in the league meeting with Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz having a field day in N17.

As a result, a change in approach will be needed for the cup clashes if Postecoglou wants to prove his worth and reach a final for the first time since joining the Lilywhites.
