Man United assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is firmly in the running to replace Erik ten Hag as the club’s manager, sources have told Football Insider.
Should the 20-time champions sack Ten Hag, then Van Nistelrooy will be in the mix to take over due to his strong links to the club and his knowledge of the player due to his current coaching role.
The 48-year-old is being considered by United chiefs to be a “safe pair of hands” to take change on an interim basis if the club doesn’t opt to make a permanent decision immediately.
Whether Van Nistelrooy wants the job permanently would be a deciding factor on if the club would give him the role.
However, sources tell Football Insider that if the offer came in, then the former United striker would be interested in taking it on.
Man United could consider Ruud van Nisterooy to take charge
United have had a difficult start to the season, having only won two of their opening seven Premier League matches.
The club are currently 14th in the table while they are also without a win in their first two Europa League matches.
The poor start to the campaign has led to increased pressure on Ten Hag’s position, which could lead to the club looking for alternative options to lead the team.
Van Nistelrooy’s knowledge of the current team could be an advantage for him after he was appointed as the assistant manager in July.
The Dutch coach does have experience as a manager having managed PSV after he replaced former head coach Roger Schmidt.
Van Nistelrooy boasted a 64.7 win percentage during his spell in charge, which saw him oversee 51 games.
