Glenn Hoddle slammed an age-old football rule as a deflected pass-back into Jack Butland helped Rangers escape Tottenham pressure on Thursday.
The Gers held Tottenham to a 1-1 draw in the Europa League at Ibrox [12 December] to pile further pressure on Ange Postecoglou after Dejan Kulusevski cancelled out Hamza Igamane’s opener.
However, Spurs had threatening moments in the first half and one moment, where a Jefte interception diverted into the path of Butland helped relieve pressure.
Speaking live on TNT Sports [12 December, 8:21pm], Hoddle could not believe it: “That’s the strange thing about that rule.
“If you mishit the pass back, the goalkeeper can pick it up. It’s ridiculous.”
Rangers can hold their head high after Tottenham draw
The Light Blues were widely expected to taste defeat in the Europa League at the hands of Postecoglou – what unfolded at Ibrox couldn’t have been more different.
Rangers came out of the block flying against the Premier League outfit and could have headed into the half-time break a goal to the good, only for Nedim Bajrami to miss a Jefte cross with the Spurs goal gaping.
Vaclav Cerny was as lively as ever, and Mohammed Diomande ran the show from the centre of the park – he left Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur in the dust in almost every encounter as every player in light blue held their own.
However, Diomande will miss the match against Manchester United after a needless handball led to a booking.
Naturally, the visitors had moments where they looked like they could steal the advantage in Glasgow, and while former Spurs man Hoddle can bemoan a rule that has existed in football for as long as time, his side were simply not good enough on the night.
Igamane took his effort with all the composure of a seasoned professional but unfortunately had his match-winning moment stolen from him by Kulusevski.
Clement can now prepare for the Scottish League Cup final showdown against Celtic on Sunday [15 December] with all the confidence in the world after making Tottenham look like a second-tier outfit at Ibrox.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues will earn a multi-million-pound windfall at Ibrox.
