Wolves have already held talks with Graham Potter about replacing Gary O’Neil, according to The Mail.
According to the outlet’s website on 5 December, Wolves have been “actively sounding out replacements,” and “tentative conversations” were conducted with the Englishman last month.
The report suggests that the delay in sacking him is due to a “lack of replacements”. However, the Midlands club may have taken too long to make any decision on Potter.
Football Insider exclusively revealed on Wednesday (4 December) that the former Brighton and Chelsea manager is now emerging as the leading contender to become West Ham’s next manager.
Sources told Football Insider today (5 December) that those talks with the 49-year-old have reached an advanced stage with the Hammers.
Wolves sack looks inevitable for Gary O’Neil as pressure grows
Football Insider opinion
This news follows a crushing 4-0 defeat to Everton on 4 December, which further exposed Wolves’ defensive struggles.
O’Neil’s side has conceded the most goals in the Premier League this season. They’ve allowed 36 goals in just 14 matches.
The team’s playing style is not working, and they continue to leak too many goals. Former Manchester United and Sunderland assistant manager Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider that O’Neil must make changes to his approach or face the sack.
It seems only a matter of time before the Englishman is dismissed. The team sits 19th in the table and three points adrift of safety.
Victories over Southampton and Fulham in November offered some renewed hope. But back-to-back losses and conceding four goals to Bournemouth and Everton have put pressure firmly back on the 41-year-old.
The former Bournemouth coach may survive for now if a suitable replacement cannot be found. But big games are coming up, with West Ham on Monday night (9 December).
The Wolves manager could be facing his final game against the team destined to appoint the manager who could have replaced him at his own club.
In other news, Wolves want to extend the contract of Matheus Cunha.
