Gary O'Neil sack: 'Stunning fall at Wolves after Man United job news'

Gary O’Neil’s rapid fall from grace as Wolves manager has seemingly been underlined following a new revelation involving Man United.

The 41-year-old currently finds himself under immense pressure at Molineux, with his side 19th in the Premier League table.

Despite a 2-1 defeat to fellow strugglers West Ham on Monday night (9 December), the former Bournemouth boss remains in his position as things stand but Mick Brown has told Football Insider he will likely go before their next outing against Ipswich.

It is understood that Wolves have already begun searching for a new boss, suggesting the writing is on the wall for O’Neil already.

Things though could seemingly have gone in a very different direction for the beleaguered manager, had Man United chosen an alternative route of their own earlier in the calendar year.

Gary O’Neil long way from Man United interest at Wolves

According to a recent report from The Guardian, the 41-year-old was among a long list of candidates considered by the Red Devils to replace Erik ten Hag as manager back in the spring.

At the time that interest would have made plenty of sense. Wolves impressed under O’Neil for so much of last season, even looking like potential outsiders for a European place.

That all fell away when they picked up just five points from their last ten league games of the 2023/24 campaign, a run they are yet to recover from to prompt this speculation around the manager’s future.

All of that does underline the rapid and dramatic decline that O’Neil has experienced at Molineux in the past few months.

Not long ago, he was in contention to take over as manager of one of the highest-profile and richest clubs in the world of football, albeit one in the midst of their own decline on previous standards.

Had he been given that opportunity, he could have received some significant backing in the summer, that may have given him the opportunity to push a big club back towards its trophy-winning potential.

Now, he is seemingly losing the battle to keep his job at a Wolves side who are facing the ever growing threat of relegation to the Premier League.

It is certainly telling that O’Neil’s name was never even mentioned in dispatches when Ten Hag was eventually sacked and replaced by Ruben Amorim at Man United at the end of October.

All of that means as he faces growing calls from Wolves fans for him to go, the 41-year-old will surely be left to wonder what might have been, had the Red Devils elected to part company with Ten Hag sooner.

In other news, Matheus Cunha’s response to a potential contract offer from Wolves has been revealed.
