Emiliano Martinez sends 'strong' message to Aston Villa fans

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was delighted with his side’s “strong away performance” in their 3-2 Champions League win over RB Leipzig on Tuesday (December 10).

The 32-year-old completed the full 90 minutes, recording four saves and four recoveries but committing one error that led to a goal as Aston Villa claimed all three points.

Captain John McGinn opened the scoring after just three minutes before Lois Openda leveled things for the home side just ahead of the half-hour mark.

Jhon Duran came off the bench to score once against just after replacing Ollie Watkins at half-time to restore Villa’s lead, but they were pegged back once again by Christoph Baumgartner.

Villa and RB Leipzig looked set to share the spoils before Ross Barkley popped up with an 85th-minute winner, edging the Premier League side closer to securing qualification for the knockout rounds.

The World Cup winner has been key for Emery so far this season, starting all 21 of his appearances across all competitions, conceding 25 goals, and keeping six clean sheets in 1845 minutes of action.

Martinez took to Instagram after the game to celebrate “another strong away performance” from Aston Villa.

Villa seem to have navigated their way out of a dismal run of form, winning their last three games having gone winless in their previous eight across all competitions.

Attention will return to the Premier League on Saturday (December 14) as Villa host high-flying Nottingham Forest.
