Gary Keown has admitted being embarrassed by his early thoughts about Philippe Clement suggesting that the Rangers manager is now “gaslighting” supporters.
The Belgian has come under serious pressure at Ibrox which has only been made worse by the defeat against Aberdeen on Wednesday (30 October).
Demands of patience from the manager to Gers supporters haven’t gone down well which has seen Keown tear into the manager in his column for the Scottish Mail on Sunday (3 November, page 92).
He said: “It is embarrassing now to concede that, in his early days in the manager’s role, Clement appeared to many of us as the calm voice of sanity that Rangers needed.
“Listening slack-jawed to the stuff he comes out with these days, it’s hard not to wonder if that water bottle he sips on the touchline has had a bit of old Henry Jekyll’s special serum in it.
“Clement has either gone down the road of deliberately gaslighting the punters or he simply doesn’t have a grasp on what the old place is about. Either way, he’s lost the plot.”
Philippe Clement accused of “gaslighting” at Rangers
The wheels appear to be falling off for the ex-Monaco boss at Ibrox as fans continue to grow impatient with results in recent weeks.
There have been some wins which have eased negativity around the Light Blues with wins against FCSB and St Mirren making it appear that things were on the up.
This hasn’t appeared to be the case which was summed up by the bitterly disappointing defeat against Aberdeen at Pittodrie.
Given the slow start that the Gers have made in the Scottish Premiership, a win was a requirement against Jimmy Thelin’s side but a poor performance was summed up by a 2-1 loss.
This leaves Clement and his side nine points behind the top two in the title race, in need of a miracle to even come close to their Old Firm rivals.
With that being said, it is little surprise that supporters want the manager gone and that feeling is echoed massively by Keown.
In other Rangers news, A doctor has suggested that one player is unlikely to play a full 90 minutes for the next few weeks.
