Ex-Rangers winger Jamie Murphy has claimed it would be a “travesty” if his former side fail to beat Motherwell in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final.
Rangers find themselves nine points behind Aberdeen in the league following their mid-week defeat at Pittodrie and failure to beat Motherwell could be the final nail in the coffin for manager Philippe Clement.
Sunday’s encounter with Motherwell could be the Gers’ only chance at winning silverware this season and Murphy has spoken about the importance of his former side progressing in the competition.
Speaking to MailSport on 3 November, he said: “It’s unthinkable for Rangers to lose. If it doesn’t go their way there will be big problems. To lose ground to the team who are second in the league – never mind the team in first – then go out of the cup would be a huge no-no.
“It will be a travesty if they don’t beat Motherwell. From being there myself, I know that winning by a scrappy goal isn’t enough when you’re at Rangers. You need to play well in doing it and that just hasn’t happened.”
Philippe Clement is walking a tightrope at Rangers
When the Gers find themselves nine points from the top spot in the league, heavy scrutiny is going to follow and it is certainly warranted.
The Belgian has been under fire for several weeks now and defeat against Motherwell would surely deem his position as untenable at Ibrox.
With that said, there are many other issues at the club that need resolving and sacking Clement will not address them all.
The Scottish giants currently find themselves without a permanent chairman and financial developments released this week showed the club recording losses of £17.2 million.
Both the on and off-field happenings at the club led to Gary Keown describing Rangers as a “basketcase” and at the moment, it is very hard to make a case against those claims.
It is approaching four years since Rangers last won the league title and as long as the current issues are ongoing, their fortunes do not appear to be changing any time soon.
In other Rangers news, Nils Koppen has been hammered by Kris Boyd for his control of the Rangers recruitment while Philippe Clement has been in charge.
