Hugh Keevins believes heavy investment or a total takeover is required to solve the current “state of disarray” at Rangers.
This comes after the club confirmed that the Gers racked up a £67,000 bill for renting out Hampden Park after redevelopment setbacks emerged at Ibrox ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
The Gers’ annual report also showed the club operating at a £17million loss for the financial year ending 30 June 2023, prompting talk of investment from those outside of the Ibrox walls.
Writing via the Daily Record on Sunday (3 November), Keevins said: “In my professional lifetime I’ve never known one of the two pre-eminent Scottish clubs to be in such a state of disarray.
“Their finances are in a perilous state. The temporary residency at Hampden is believed to have cost the club £670,000 in rent and their annual wage bill remains huge.
“Investment on a substantial level, if not a takeover, is clearly required to prevent a worsening of the club’s transparently troubled state.
“But if the suggestion made by chief financial officer James Taylor that an improvement in the player trading model holds the key to fiscal recovery then there’s trouble ahead.”
Rangers takeover on the cards?
With a “delusional” manager at the wheel and half of the boardroom missing, it is difficult to understand who is currently making the decisions at Ibrox.
If it were the fans, Philippe Clement would have been sacked weeks ago, with banners now popping up around Ibrox calling for the manager’s departure as soon as possible.
However, it is clear that the gulf between the Gers and Old Firm rivals Celtic can be put down to the difference in financial states, with the latter spending on a much bigger scale.
A complete takeover could help solve those problems but it remains to be seen if those at Ibrox want that or if the on-pitch issues would also be fixed.
Something certainly needs to change, with new problems emerging at Ibrox each week and the Light Blues currently nine points adrift from the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
However, fans are not filled with any hope that things will change anytime soon.
In other Rangers news, a journalist has compared Philippe Clement to Pedro Caixinha in a new sack verdict.
