John Gilligan will want to avoid sending “shockwaves” through Rangers by sacking Philippe Clement before his interim chairmanship ends, Daily Record journalist Robbie Copeland has said.
Clement remains a man under pressure at Ibrox despite heading into the latest international break with a bit of leeway after the Gers reached the Scottish League Cup final and defeated Hearts either side of a creditable Europa League draw with Olympiacos.
But Copeland thinks the Belgian will earn a stay of execution as Gilligan will not want to rock the board before a new chairman takes the reins.
“There’s no CEO, nor is there a permanent chairman after James Bisgrove and John Bennett left their roles this year. That’s left temporary chief John Gilligan with a full plate long before he considers getting rid of the man in charge of the football operation, ,” he wrote in the Daily Record (13 November)
“There’s also the consideration that Gilligan, only in the job for the short-term, is likely reluctant to make a decision that will send shockwaves through the club for the rest of the football season and beyond.
“Similarly, at a time when he’s likely never been busier in his life, does he want to be lumbered with recruiting the next manager, with no CEO to fall back on for a second opinion?
“The timing just isn’t right to replace their manager, or find a new one, unless they absolutely have to.”
John Gilligan won’t sack Philippe Clement at Rangers
Copeland is absolutely right in what he is saying and it alludes to an absolute farce of a situation at Rangers.
Had their affairs been in order off the pitch, it is hard to imagine Clement would have survived such a poor start to the campaign that has seen them trailing not only their Old Firm rivals Celtic but Aberdeen as well, with the Gers nine points behind both.
It is galling enough for supporters to be so far off Celtic’s pace but to be struggling to even finish second is, quite frankly, unthinkable.
But it stands to reason that Gilligan would be reticent to make the decision when he is going to be handing the reins over to a new chairman in the near future.
If he pulled the trigger it would likely leave Rangers even more of a rudderless ship, something they can ill-afford at this juncture.
Clement, by fortune of circumstances, has a stay of execution but only time will tell if he can take advantage of the respite.
In other Rangers news, one pundit had his say on if Derek McInnes would be open to replacing Clement at Ibrox.
