Tom English shares Clement sympathy in Rangers sack verdict

Tom English has “sympathy” for Philippe Clement and does not believe he is on the verge of being sacked.

The Gers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership and find themselves nine points adrift of title rivals Celtic and Aberdeen.

Replying to a fan’s question regarding the future of the Belgian, English shared his thoughts on whether Clement is still the right man for Rangers.

“I don’t think he’s a defeat or a draw away from losing his job. I know that’s how it’s been framed, but how do we know,” he wrote via the BBC Sport website (13 November).

“We were told that if they lost at Hampden, he was a gonner. Who says? Where does that information come from? I think that’s just a creation.

“It’s something we think should happen, or maybe Rangers fans think should happen, but there’s no substance to it.

“Clement has a hell of a job on his hands. He’s got a squad that’s patchy, unimpressive.

“He’s also the figurehead of the club because there’s no permanent chairman, there’s no chief executive, many of the key positions have a big vacant sign on them.

“I have a lot of sympathy for Clement because he’s getting it in the neck from his own fans for the really underwhelming performances Rangers are putting in.

“While at the same time, there doesn’t appear to be leadership around him. There’s nobody there to kind of lighten his load from what I can see. It’s all on him.

“I do still think he’s the man for the job but the job is getting harder and harder”.

Rangers and Philippe Clement must part ways before it gets too late

While English may have the opinion that Clement is the right man for the Gers’ managerial role, it feels like he’s been given far too many chances already this term and has time and time again failed to prove his worth.

Indeed, there have been glimpses of good showings such as their games against FCSB and Malmo in the Europa League, but when the losses against Kilmarnock and Aberdeen are taken into account, it feels as if the Belgian is just missing that cutting-edge.

Of course, the 50-year-old can’t be solely to blame because players such as Cyriel Dessers have had multiple chances to put games away, but when the team’s poor form and Clement’s lack of leadership are combined, it often makes for difficult viewing.

If at the start of the season Rangers fans were told that they’d be third in the table and nine points away from second, they’d have thought you were mad.

However, that’s now the reality and, without a change at the top, it’s hard to see how the club will challenge for the title this term.
